JU Economics dept. gives farewell to Eminent Economist Prof. Mustahidur Rahman

JU Correspondent: The Economics Department of Jahangirnagar University (JU) gave farewell to eminent economist Prof. Dr. Khandaker Mustahidur Rahman who retired from the the department recently.

The department organised the farewell ceremony at the seminar room of the department on Thursday.
Prof. Mustahidur Rahman was former Vice-Chancellor of JU from 2004 to 2008. He took the first class of the University on 4th January, 1971 when the university had started its journey.

Addressing as the guest, Dean of Social Sciences Prof. Amir Hussain said “He (Mustahidur) gave knowledge to students at the university for a long time as a ‘live library’. He was a student friendly teacher. Though, he has the different political identity but he was the most respectable person for us.

As per the rule of the profession, he is going to retirement but we will have relations with him always.”

Prof. Dr. Khandaker Mustahidur Rahman said, “A Professor never take retirement from his teaching until death. So, I will try to teach of my beloved students when they will call me.”

Among others, AKM Shahidur Rahman, president of JU Economic Alumni, Prof. Khandaker Md. Ashraful Munim (Nehal), Assistant Prof. Ayesha Siddika, Assistant Prof. Luthfor Rahman were also spoke.

Chairman of the department Prof. Mohammad Amzad Hossain chaired the programme while Associate Prof. Shafiqul Islam conducted the programme.

At a glance: Biography of Prof. Dr. Khandaker Mustahidur Rahman

Prof Dr. Khandaker Mustahidur Rahman was born on 22th February 1949 at Brahmanbaria. His father late Khandaker Shamsur Rahman was a Sub Division Controller of Food, at the Ministry of Food in the Government of East Pakistan & mother late Rowshonara Begum was a housewife.

Dr. Mustahid passed his SSC from Dhaka Collegiate School, placed in the 1st position (Science Group) at the Dhaka board in 1964. He then passed his HSC from Dhaka College in 1966. He then graduated from University of Dhaka from the Department of Economics in 1969. Prof. Mustahid completed his MSc. from Islamabad University in 1970.

Professor Rahman joined Jahangirnagar University in 4th January 1971. He took the first class of Jahangirnagar University on 4th January, 1971 (University officially inaugurated 12th January 1971). In 1973 Prof. Mustahidur Rahman got the Ford foundation scholarship and went to University of Essex (UK) for his Phd.

After getting his Phd from Essex University, Professor Rahman came back to Bangladesh in 1979. Again in 1986 Prof. Mustahid went to UK at the University of Sussex for completing his post Doctorate. He became Professor at the Department of Economics in 1988 & Dean of the Social Science Faculty in 1984.

He was elected Vice-Chancellor by members of senate of Jahangirnagar University in 2004. He was the President of Bangladesh University Teachers Federation in 1993.
During his student life at Dhaka University Prof. Mustahid was an active member of Student Union. He actively took part in 1969’s political movement against Ayub Khan and the liberation war in 1971.
