Dhaka: Finance Minister AMA Muhith on Wednesday urged the government officials to take oaths that they will not be involved in any graft and irregularity while performing their duty at their respective work place.

He came up with the call while addressing a function arranged by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) at Shilpakala Academy in the capital.

The ACC arranged the prize distribution ceremony to honour its best upazila and zila corruption prevention committees.

Speaking as the chief guest, Muhith said the government officials are now getting more salaries and that is why they need not be involved in graft.

“Even a lower-grade government official is getting at least Tk 16,000 and one can lead an honest life spending the salary,” he added.

Appraising the activities of the Commission, the Finance Minister said the ACC is involving youth generation in its anti-corruption movement and trying to keep away from corruption.

Noting that character of a person is built in one’s early age, he said if one learns moral lessons during his or her childhood, it will be quite impossible to be involved in corruption during his or her working life.

Not only in Bangladesh, Muhith said corruption has increased across the world, because greed is on the rise.

There is a strong and independent anti-graft agency in the country, he said, adding that no lobby will work in the Commission.

ACC chairman Iqbal Mahmood, its commissioner AFM Aminul Islam, secretary Abu M Mustafa Kamal and director general (prevention) Dr Shamsul Arefin, among others, spoke on the occasion.
