Protest against suspension of Journo at JU

Jahangirnagar University(JU) working journalist protested against the allegation of expulsion and harassment of Zinia, a campus correspondent at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University (BSMRSTU) through a human chain today.

The human chain placed at the premises of university’s Amar Ekush sculpture around 12.00pm, conducted by the general secretary of Jahangirnagar University Journalist Association (JUJA), Hasan Al Mahmud.

The protest made under the banner of “Working Journalist at JU campus” while over 80 journalists of different print and online media and the activist of different cultural organization took part in the human chain.

Working journalists’ of the university demanded the freedom journalism in all the university campus which are now hampering by the interfere of the authorities.

While speaking on the programme, Vice president of JUJA and campus correspondent of Daily Star, Asaduz Zaman said,” “I strongly condemn such a blatant incident by the VC of the BSMRSTU and freedom journalism must be ensured all over the coutry. Such injustice and dictatorial behaviour is not expected in such a places like university. The VC, including his officials and fellows involving this incident, should seek unconditional apology to Zinia.”

President of Jahangirnagar University press club (JUPS) and campus correspondent of Daily Jayjaydin Md Musa, said,”’We want the freedom of the media. We demand that every citizen of the country should have the rights of speaking the truth. Besides, I strongly protest against the behavior of the VC of BSMRSTU.”

President of Jahangirnagar Cultural Alliance Ashiqur Rahman said, “The autocratic attitude of the highest administrators of different universities is inaccurate. The statement of the highest administrator of that university can never be so naked. We are protesting the behavior of the VC of BSMRSTU.”
Earlier, On September 10, the university authorities suspended her for her posts on social media which the authorities claimed has tarnished the university’s image.

Zinia said that she did not post anything derogatory and faced suspension for her reports on irregularities and corruption in the university.

The suspension has sparked criticism on the social media. Many demanded unconditional withdrawal of her suspension and a proper investigation into the corruption allegations. Then the authorities has withdrawn the expulsion treating as control over as parents.
