Teachers and students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) on Monday formed a human chain on campus protesting the alleged murder of a student of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) Abrar Fahad.

Abrar Fahad, a second year student of Electrical and Electronic Engineering department of Bangladesh University BUET, was allegedly beaten to death on Sunday night by some Chhatra League leaders for his alleged involvement with Islami Chhatra Shibir.

Under the banner of “Students of Jahangirnagar University”, the human chain was held in front of the Central Shaheed Minar of the university about 1.30 pm.

President of JU Cultural Alliance, Ashikur Rahman, said, “No organization has the right to beat up an ordinary student, there killing is a heinous crime. If the organization does not take action against the students involved at this killing, then the organization should be banned. We are demanding immediate trial of Abara’s murder.”

President of Socialist Students’ Front (Marxist) of JU unit Mahathir Mohammad said, “For criticizing India’s aggressive policies on Facebook, Chhatra League activists killed Abrar Fahad. Since there is freedom of expression in the country, they cannot interrogate anyone. We immediately demand justice for the murder of Abrar.”

At the concluding speech, Chairman of Anthropology department Prof. Sayeed Ferdous said, “There is no freedom of expression in our country and democracy is only present in the name. So if someone killed, there will not have any proper justice. When there is a slight movement on it then it is brought to justice. This is how the contempt of humanity is going on. This situation can’t be allowed to continue in the country.”

A protest procession was also brought out at the end of human chain. Over 150 teachers and students of the university took part at the human chain
