The female teachers, officers and employees of Jahangirnagar University (JU) today formed a human chain protesting humiliation and violence on women.
Under the banner of “Female Teachers, Officers and Employees of Jahangirnagar University” they formed the human chain at central Shaheed Minar premises on the campus around 10.30 am.
At this time, speakers of the human chain said, “Women society has been humiliated by burning the effigy of Prof Farzana Islam. ‘Saree’ is a symbol of women’s progress and respect. The burning of ‘saree’ revealed a violent attitude to women. We think that burning a teacher’s effigy is not good practice for any teacher. It is disgraceful for the university teachers to be involved in such activities. In such activities, the entire women society has been humiliated. We are demanding justice for all involved these activities.”
After the human chain, protesters met with journalists at a press conference held at the lounge of new arts building.
In a written statement at the press conference, Associate Professor of Marketing department , Barota Chakraborty said, “To oust Vice-Chancellor Professor Farzana Islam, some teachers and students have arranged such programs that are abusive to women. Disrespecting women is not acceptable. Those involved in this incident will have to be brought to justice.”
Earlier, a faction of teachers and students of Jahangirnagar University burnt the effigy of Vice Chancellor Prof. Farzana Islam on Sunday as part of ongoing protest demanding her resignation, accusing her involvement in corruption and other issues.
