JU BCL man accused over ragging

A student of Jahangirnagar University (JU) on Tuesday beat up a junior student for participating in the torch procession protesting the ongoing corruption and unplanned development project of university administration on the campus.

The victim was identified as Shoayeb Ibne Masud, a first year (48 batch) student of International Relations (IR) department and a resident student of Al Beruni Hall.

The accused student was identified as Saifur Rahman Sarkar, a 2nd year student of Public Health and Informatics department (47 batch) and resident student of Al Beruni hall. He is also an activist of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and loyal to JU BCL president Jewel Rana.

Talking to the victim Shoayeb Ibne Masud said, “I was returning to hall after taking part at the torch procession under the banner of ‘Jahangirnagar Against Corruption’ on Tuesday. At midnight, accused Saifur Rahman called me and asked my identity and verbally abused me as I took part to the torch procession. At one stage, he hit my chest and pulled my collar and tearing shirt button”.

The victim has confirmed that he has given a complaint letter to hall provost demanding justice for the incident.

However, it was impossible to reach the accused Saifur after taking several attempts.

When contacted, Provost of Al Beruni hall, Associate Professor Ashraful Islam said, “I have received the complaint letter. I will sit with all teachers of the dormitory and will form a probe body to inquire the incident’.

JU Acting Proctor A S M Firoj Ul Hasan Said, “I know about the incident. As it is the internal matter of the hall, I have told the hall Provost to inquiry it. If the hall Provost wants our assistance, we will cooperate.”

Earlier, the accused Saifur Rahman was expelled temporarily for his involvement in ragging to the first year students of Public Health and Informatics department.
